Technical SEO is the infrastructure that makes your website readable by search engines and AI. It's everything under the hood -- the plumbing, the wiring, the foundation. Visitors never see it, but without it, nothing else you build on your site works the way it should.

You can write the best content in your industry. You can nail your keywords. You can post on social media every day. But if Google can't crawl your site, can't index your pages, or takes 8 seconds to load them -- none of that effort shows up in search results. Technical SEO is the reason some well-written websites get zero organic traffic while mediocre ones rank on page one.

The 6 Pillars of Technical SEO

Technical SEO covers a lot of ground, but it breaks down into six core areas. Every audit I run checks all six. Here they are, in plain English.

1. Crawlability

Before Google can rank your pages, it has to find them. Crawling is the process where search engine bots visit your site and follow links to discover your content. Two files control this:

  • robots.txt-- A text file at the root of your site that tells crawlers which pages they can and can't access. Get this wrong and you can accidentally block Google from your entire site. I've seen it happen.
  • XML Sitemap-- A file that lists every page you want indexed. It's a roadmap for search engines. Without it, crawlers have to discover pages by following links, which means deeper pages may never get found.

In the audits I run, missing or broken sitemaps are one of the most common problems. Some sites have sitemaps that haven't been updated in years. Others have none at all.

2. Indexability

Crawling and indexing are different things. Just because Google finds your page doesn't mean it adds the page to its index. Two key elements control indexability:

  • Canonical tags-- These tell Google which version of a page is the "real" one. If you have duplicate content (and most sites do), canonical tags prevent Google from getting confused about which page to rank.
  • Noindex tags -- These tell Google not to index specific pages. Useful for thank-you pages, internal search results, and staging environments. The problem is when noindex tags accidentally end up on pages you do want indexed.

I once audited a site where every single blog post had a noindex tag because their SEO plugin was misconfigured. They had 80+ articles and zero of them were appearing in Google. The content was great -- the technical setup was blocking it.

3. Page Speed

Google has been clear: page speed is a ranking factor. But it goes deeper than rankings. Slow pages lose visitors. Every second of load time costs you conversions. Google measures speed through Core Web Vitals:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) -- How fast the main content loads. Target: under 2.5 seconds.
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint) -- How fast the page responds when you click or tap. Target: under 200 milliseconds.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) -- How much the page layout jumps around while loading. Target: under 0.1.

The biggest speed killers I see: unoptimized images (sometimes 3MB hero images on mobile), too many fonts, heavy page builders like Elementor and Divi, and no caching configured.

4. Mobile Usability

Google uses mobile-first indexing, which means it primarily uses the mobile version of your site for ranking and indexing. If your site looks great on desktop but breaks on mobile, Google is ranking the broken version.

Common mobile issues: text too small to read, buttons too close together, horizontal scrolling, content wider than the screen, and pop-ups that block the entire page. These seem minor but they directly impact both user experience and rankings.

5. Security

HTTPS is non-negotiable. Google has used HTTPS as a ranking signal since 2014. If your site still runs on HTTP, you're losing rankings and showing a "Not Secure" warning in browsers that scares visitors away.

Beyond HTTPS, security headers matter too. Headers like Content-Security-Policy, X-Frame-Options, and Strict-Transport-Security protect your site from attacks and signal to search engines that your site is well-maintained. Most sites I audit are missing all of them.

6. Structured Data (Schema Markup)

Structured data is code you add to your site that tells machines exactly what your business is, what you offer, and how to categorize you. Without it, search engines guess. With it, they know. Schema markup triggers rich results in Google (star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, business details) and helps AI systems understand your business at a structural level.

Most websites have zero structured data. This is consistently one of the biggest gaps I find in audits, and one of the highest-impact fixes available.

How Technical SEO Connects to AI Visibility

Here's what most people miss: AI systems depend on the same infrastructure that traditional search does. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT (when it browses), Perplexity -- they all need to crawl your site, read your content, and understand your structure.

If your robots.txt blocks AI crawlers, they can't read your site. If your pages load slowly, crawlers may time out before indexing your content. If you have no structured data, AI has to guess what your business does instead of knowing.

Technical SEO isn't just about Google rankings anymore. It's the foundation for AI discoverability. Every technical issue you fix makes your site more readable to both search engines and AI systems.

What to Fix First

If you're looking at your own site and feeling overwhelmed, here's the priority order I use with clients. Fix these in this sequence because each one builds on the last:

1. HTTPS-- If your site isn't secure, fix this first. Everything else depends on it. Most hosts offer free SSL certificates.

2. Sitemap + robots.txt -- Make sure search engines can find and crawl your pages. Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console.

3. Canonical tags -- Add self-referencing canonicals to every page. Fix any duplicate content issues.

4. Page speed -- Compress images, enable caching, remove unnecessary scripts. Test with PageSpeed Insights.

5. Mobile usability-- Test every page on a real phone. Fix anything that doesn't work on a small screen.

6. Structured data-- Add Organization/LocalBusiness, FAQPage, and Service schema at minimum. Validate with Google's Rich Results Test.

Real Audit Examples

Every audit I run starts with technical SEO because it's the foundation everything else is built on. Here are patterns I see over and over:

  • A service business with 40 pages and no XML sitemap. Google had only indexed 12 of them. After adding the sitemap and submitting it to Search Console, all 40 pages were indexed within two weeks.
  • An e-commerce site running on HTTP with a 6-second load time on mobile. After switching to HTTPS, compressing images, and enabling caching, load time dropped to 2.1 seconds and organic traffic increased 35% in 60 days.
  • A local business with duplicate content across www and non-www versions. Google was splitting their authority between both versions. Adding canonical tags consolidated everything and their main pages moved up 3-5 positions.
  • A professional services firm with zero structured data. After implementing Organization, Service, FAQPage, and Person schema, they started appearing with rich results within a week. Click-through rates jumped noticeably from the same ranking positions.

Why Technical SEO Is the Foundation

Content, backlinks, social signals, AI optimization -- all of these are important. But they all sit on top of technical SEO. If the foundation is cracked, everything above it underperforms.

The good news: most technical SEO issues are fixable in a single session. They don't require new content, a redesign, or a new website. They require someone who knows what to look for, what to fix, and in what order. That's my approach -- start with the technical foundation, then build everything else on top of it.
